Grief is a natural and universal response to loss. We often associate “loss” with death, but it includes a wide variety of events, including, for example, the loss of a relationship, the loss of a job, or a change in status. Any event that causes a disruption to our daily lives – whether physically, mentally, or emotionally – may be experienced as a loss.
Trauma occurs when an individual experiences a loss that overwhelms one’s ability to cope with and integrate the emotions triggered by the loss, resulting in confusion and vulnerability. It is, essentially, an “assault to the brain”. Trauma is highly subjective; everyone reacts differently to events, and what is highly traumatizing to one may not be to another. Traumatic events may include verbal or physical abuse, assaults to identity, and betrayal.
